9Rules

Ok, so you’re trying to follow the 101 Ways to Become a Better Blogger on Lifehack. Rule #6 says to submit your site to 9rules. Now since this blog is following those steps, I have done this. Sort of. Blog submissions are currently closed. A fact I didn’t actually know. I thought you had to be a member for a certain amount of time. I know I put my blog URL in somewhere, but that could have been my 9Rules profile to tell the truth. I have no idea what it was for.

So then you have Marcus Williford, who posted #6 Submit your blog to 9Rules after his attempt to join 9Rules and submit his blog. Now to me, it wasn’t really fair of them to suspend his account. If they’re worried about spam, put a a minimum time you have to be there like everyone else does. Seriously. Don’t let people post to the Notes or forums or anything like that until they’ve been there say, 10 days. Also, what may be a pointless post to you, may point me to some information I consider to be valuable. So truthfully, I’m not fond of the bigwigs at 9Rules being allowed to decide what constitutes a meaningful post to the Notes. That post would have been very meaningful to me, trying to get a new blog off the ground on the right foot. But now a lot of bloggers who may have joined 9Rules will never know about the post in question.

Also, just a note, some people refer to themselves in the third person when writing things like that.

A few notes of my own on spam prevention. If you want to prevent spam, #1, institute a minimum time you must be a member before you can post, and #2, get some human moderators who can check the boards regularly. Remember, what YOU consider spam should not be the issue here. Let your MEMBERS decide what is spam. If it’s porn, of course, it’s spam. If it’s a blog, I don’t think it’s intended as spam, especially at a social networking site that’s supposed to be designed around blogs.

If you read this and feel the need to suspend or ban my account from 9Rules, believe me, I won’t cry. I barely ever log in anyways.

  1. Just a quick note to say we removed multiple email complaints regarding Marcus’ post, and that contributed greatly to why we took it down. We do have human moderators, and then we have thousands of people who care deeply about the content on 9rules and alert us to anything that doesn’t belong, and the combination of those two has worked great for us so far.

I like the idea about making people wait X days before posting though, we might look into that :)

I hope you don’t think I was being rude. However, I believe that Lifehack may have had the wrong idea about what it is 9rules is meant for. I believe they thought it was for blog promotion when this doesn’t appear, note I say doesn’t appear, to be the case.

  3. Thanks for the mention here. I love the theme of your blog. I’m doing the whole 101 steps and would love for you to join in with me.

I have every intention of joining you. I’ve got several of the steps completed so far, although a lot of them are out of order. LOL
