Do You Use MyBlogLog??

If you are a blogger who uses MyBlogLog frequently, then you may wish to be aware of the following news. This was brought to my attention through a tweet from @lizstrauss whose blog can be found at Successful Blog. She found this article which states that Yahoo! who, like Google has gotten into a habit of acquiring services that it thinks will be profitable for them, will be shutting down MyBlogLog next month.

Personally, although I have not used the widget as of late because of issues with my blogs, I liked MyBlogLog. It allowed for a sense of community, it allowed you to see who was visiting your blog, and it allowed you to interact with those bloggers. Now bloggers everywhere who use MyBlogLog for that purpose will have a void that they will need to fill.

Like other services such as Geocities, Yahoo! acquired MyBlogLog and then allowed the service to languish and deteriorate to the point it was no longer a viable, profitable service and their only option is to close it. To be honest, while this would be a topic for another post, it makes me wonder if Yahoo! doesn’t buy these services with the express intent of shutting them down after a couple of years.

There is an alternative to MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, which can be used in much the same way as MyBlogLog was. While I preferred MyBlogLog to BlogCatalog, the BlogCatalog service is a suitable replacement for MyBlogLog for those who used the service.

WordPress 2.9 Available

WordPress 2.9 is now available, however, you do need to be aware that if you are a blogger who schedules posts in advance, there is apparently a bug in 2.9 that causes all posts that are scheduled to be posted in the future to NOT post and have a status of “missed schedule” when you log into your dashboard. To actually see the missed schedule error you have to go to your posts list, where it will show on the right hand side of the post in question.

I have already upgraded 2 of my blogs, but I am not one to use scheduled posts, so this bug does not bother me much. However, I have noticed that plugins that are listed as having updates available do not work with 2.9 until they are upgraded. I have had several plugins stop working until they were updated, so be aware that you may not see your plugins working either if there is an update.

A New Way to Do Online Auctions

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Bidazzled. All opinions are 100% mine.

If you are like me, you look to online auctions for various items. Sometimes I’ll look for auctions on items that I can’t find around here, or I’ll look for online auctions for items that I found where I live, but think I can find a better price if I get them online via an auction. That being said, I’m sure you can imagine where I usually end up doing my auction shopping. LOL However, I have found an interesting new auction website – the concept is new, at least to me, and I’m wondering if perhaps it might be a new one to you.

Bidazzled is an online auction website which uses purchased bid packs for your bids. Basically what you would do is purchase a bid pack and then use those bids to bid on items you want. Bids cost $1 and are available in packages starting at $25. Each bid you use raises the price you’d pay for the item by a few cents and adds a few seconds to the countdown to when the auction ends, allowing other bidders time to submit a bid on the item. Auctions are over when no bids have been placed before the countdown runs out. In a way I can almost see an item that two people really want taking forever to end! :)

Now when you sign up, Bidazzled will give you five free bids. They’ve actually had some people win Nintendo Wii’s using only their five free bids! (Wish I’d been one of them! LOL) Plus, you can use code BBP1202A to get more bids when you register between now and January 15, 2010. So that would be 20 free bids! :) Come one now, wouldn’t you like a chance at getting a laptop or Wii for way less than it would cost to buy it at the store? Yeah, you would. ;)

I’ve been checking the Bidazzled out and I will say this – it is an interesting format for the auctions and it is kind of fun to bid this way. Plus I can get amazing deals on the items. Oh – plus – you have the option to sell your item back to Bidazzled for cash (paypal or check), cash and bids, or bids. So if you win an item, they’ll offer to buy it back from you. If you decide you don’t really want or need the item, they’ll buy it back from you. :)

What I like best about them though, is that their profits go to a lung cancer charity. (The Ruch Foundation.) This means that not only can I get great deals on what I’m bidding on, but I am also contributing to a charity at the same time. Not too shabby huh? That and they have a pretty cool referral program which gets you bids for referring people. It works like this:

Amy refers Jack – Amy receives 5 bids
Jack refers Billy – Amy receives 4 bids
Billy refers Jessica – Amy receives 3 bids
Jessica refers Angie – Amy receives 2 bids
Angie refers Tommy – Amy receives 1 bid

So you can gain extra bids by referring new users and by your referred users referring users. :) Pretty cool.

All in all, I’ve found Bidazzled to be a website worth checking out.

Re-Tweet Feature – Your Opinion??

Now I am not sure if everyone gets to see the new re-tweet feature on Twitter, but my Twitter has been showing it for a few weeks now. I do know that when it first appeared I had a banner at the top of my Twitter page that told me that if I was seeing it, I was one of the lucky few who were being allowed to see and use the feature on their accounts.

That being said, I am wondering if you use Twitter and the re-tweet feature is available to your account, do you a) use it, and b) like it?

I do like being about to re-tweet things without having to worry that the RT @so-and-so will make it too long of a tweet – plus I can re-tweet something someone else re-tweeted and it stays in the same format it was in when I found it in my timeline. However, there are some bad points about this as well. You no longer have the opportunity to add comments to the tweet. A lot of Twitter users like to re-tweet funny remarks and add responses to them when they do so. Re-tweeting using Twitter’s re-tweet feature does not allow you this opportunity.

Also, it can be very disconcerting, what with the issues of Twitter users finding people they did not follow willingly appearing in their “following” lists, to see Twitter avatars and usernames that you don’t recognize, before seeing the little re-tweet icon and seeing underneath the re-tweet who re-tweeted it. Personally, I have several people in my “following” list that I did not actually follow and who keep reappearing even after being blocked. It is bad enough to see them suddenly showing up in my Twitter, but to then see the re-tweets from friends of people I do not follow can be a bit on the annoying side.

All in all, I do think that the re-tweet feature is nice as it makes it less work for Twitter users who are on the website to actually re-tweet things, but it also makes it a bit annoying for those who want to add comments, etc to their tweets, as well as for the ones receiving these re-tweets who suddenly find themselves getting a tweet from someone they don’t follow.

Do you have the option to use the re-tweet feature? (As I said, when I got mine, it said that only a few thousand Twitter users had the feature at that time. I have no idea if it’s been fully rolled out yet or not.) If you do have the option, do you use it? If so do you like it? Or do you prefer to do your re-tweets through TweetDeck, Seesmic, etc??
